The Award

Generative Art may come in many forms. Now, this award specifically celebrates images generated from natural language descriptions (prompts), using AI-based computer programs. It aims to showcase images that were made entirely or partially using an autonomous system, and document the current state of these fast-changing technologies. This year's edition only has one award category: best of all.

Who is eligible to enter?

This contest is international and open to people 18 and older! Residents of the following countries are not eligible to enter or win: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma/Myanmar, Central African Republic, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, North Korea, Russia, Syria, the Crimea region of Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic region of Ukraine and the Luhansk People’s Republic region of Ukraine, (collectively, the “Restricted Territories”).

How do I enter my image(s)?

When are entries due?

Entries can be submitted from August 1st to November 30th, 2023.

How many images can I submit?

5 images per person.

What are the prizes?

1st Place: Cash prize of 500 EUR. 2nd Place: Cash prize of 250 EUR. 3rd Place: Cash prize of 100 EUR.

Does it cost anything to enter?

Yes, there is a participation fee of 5 EUR for each entry.

Why is there a participation fee?

The fee is used to cover the costs of running the competition.

When will the winners be chosen?

Winners will be announced on December 15th, 2023.

If I submit an entry, do you own the rights to the images?

No. We don’t own the rights to submitted images: you do. Kind of. At the moment, works created solely by artificial intelligence — even if produced from a text prompt written by a human — are not protected by copyright. However, by submitting an artwork you do grant us the right to use that image on our websites and social media channels. There is no additional compensation beyond the prize money for winners.

Can more than one of my entries be chosen as a winning image?

Yes. Winners are chosen based on merit, so it’s possible that one person could end up with 2 winning images.

The Generative Art Award celebrates images generated from natural language descriptions (prompts), using AI-based computer programs. It aims to showcase the potential of images that were made entirely or partially using an autonomous system, and document the current state of these fast-changing technologies. The competition is organised by Sonja Vilches (and co-organisers) in Bühlertal, Germany. The Generative Art Award is subject to German law, and participation implies agreement with the following terms and conditions.


To be eligible for participation, participants must be aged 18 or above as of August 1st, 2023. Participants must provide true and accurate information on the entry form. The organiser reserves the right to disqualify any entries in cases where, in their opinion, any information provided is inaccurate or has been omitted. The results of the competition are subject to the final decision of the organiser. No objections by participants will be entertained.
Residents of the following countries are excluded from the competition: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma/Myanmar, Central African Republic, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, North Korea, Russia, Syria, the Crimea region of Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic region of Ukraine and the Luhansk People’s Republic region of Ukraine.

Entry Period

August 1st to November 30th, 2023.


Winners will be announced on December 15th, 2023 on the competition website. If a winner does not respond within two weeks of notification, or declines the prize under certain conditions, it will be forfeited.

Participation Fee

To participate in the competition the participants have to accept these Terms and Conditions, and the payment of a participation fee of 5 (five) Euros for each image submitted. It is possible to present a maximum of five images for each participant.
The payment of the participation fee must be made by November 30th, 2023 via Paypal. The fee is not reimbursable, unless the Generative Art Award is terminated prematurely.


Following prizes will be awarded among all participants:
1st Prize: 500 Euro.
2nd Prize: 250 Euro.
3rd Prize: 100 Euro.

Entry Guidelines

To enter the competition create an image from natural language, using a AI-based computer program (e.g. Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Imagine Art et. Al.).
Each longer side of an image must be at least 768 pixels, at a maximum of 4MB. PNG,JPG and GIF are permitted as file formats. Each participant can submit a maximum of 5 images. An individual title must be assigned for each image.
During the entry period, visit the competition website, located at Then, either submit the generated image(s) via the on-screen entry form, or send an email including the image(s), as well as your name, age, location, email address and image title(s) to: Submission of an entry via the website will require the entrant to submit the entrant’s name, age, location, email address, and image title and such other information as the organiser may require. Entrants will receive confirmation via Email of their submission and payment of fee. Please keep the original image as it will be required in case of winning. The organiser is not liable for any loss of image data and does not guarantee that they will be stored.

Image Guidelines

The image must not contain any material that is disparaging, defamatory, threatening, indecent, sexually explicit, violent, obscene or offensive, or that promotes a political agenda, violence, bigotry or discrimination.

Image Rights

By submitting an image, the participant confirms that their image does not infringe on the rights of third parties, does not violate any copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property rights of third parties. Each image must have been created by the entrant using an AI-based computer program.
By submitting the image, the participant grants the organiser the non-exclusive, sublicensable, irrevocable, unlimited, and global right to use the image for public display of this competition and its results. This includes reproduction, distribution and exhibition through digital image carriers, as well as online rights, including internet, websites, social media, electronic mailings, online services, and on-demand services. The participant agrees that their name will be published when their images are used.

Data Privacy Information

By participating in the competition, each entrant agrees that information submitted via the website in connection with the competition will be subject to the organiser’s privacy policy available at All information submitted in connection with the competition may be used in connection with the administration of the competition, such as notification and provision of winners. The data collected is used exclusively for processing the Generative Art Award competition described above. It will not be disclosed to third parties. After the conclusion of the competition, the data will be deleted entirely.

Right to Withdraw Consent

Changes or Termination

The organiser reserves the right, at their sole discretion, to modify or replace these Terms at any time. They can cancel, modify or suspend this competition at any time, including without limitation if a virus, bug, technical problem, entrant fraud or misconduct or other cause beyond the control of the organiser corrupts the administration, integrity, security or proper operation of the competition or if for any other reason the organiser is not able to conduct the competition as planned (including without limitation in the event the competition is interfered with by any fire, flood, epidemic, earthquake, explosion, labor dispute or strike, act of God or of public enemy, communications failure, riot or civil disturbance, war (declared or undeclared), terrorist threat or activity, federal, state or local law, order or regulation or court order). In the event of termination of the competition, a notice will be posted on the website and participation fees will be reimbursed.

Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of Germany without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not be considered a waiver of those rights. If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable by a court, the remaining provisions of these Terms will remain in effect. Legal recourse is excluded.


In the event of any inconsistency between the English and translated versions in these Terms and Conditions, the English version will prevail.
